Dr Noonan's Friday COVID-19 Response Update

Versión en español a continuación

Dear FCCPS Families,

I hope you and your family are doing well, are healthy, and safe. This has been another remarkable week in the Falls Church City Public Schools. Your students, our teachers, and you are making it happen, and for that, we are grateful.

Last week, I sent you an article that described the phases of this pandemic through the lens of a school (Hong Kong International) and the lessons they learned as they moved through this process. I indicated that they identified three phases of the pandemic as it relates to schools: Triage/Crisis, Transition, and Post Pandemic. As my communications to our community continue, I am finding, and I hope you have, too, a “slowing down” of the need for quick and critical/crisis communication. We are also seeing a “settling in” with our students and teachers in online classrooms and in asynchronous learning. This, to me, indicates that we are moving out of the triage/crisis phase and moving to the transition phase. This is good news for us all insofar as we can begin to visualize and plan for what comes next. We are starting to do that! It also may mean that my updates will be shorter (I hear you...they have been long, but thanks for hanging in there).

Updates

As we continue to move through the “transition” phase in FCCPS (post-triage/crisis) we are starting to think about what the future will look like. Understanding that in the local area, we have not reached the top of the epidemiological curve, there is not widespread testing available, and we have a current “stay at home” order. Cases in the Fairfax Health District (to which we belong) and across Virginia continue to climb. However, we do need to start thinking about the near term and the longer term. Our next decision-making milestone concerning instruction will be whether we hold the face-to-face portion of our summer school as outlined in our COVID-19 Response Plan presented several weeks ago. That plan called for July 6th to be the first day of face-to-face summer school. We will make a final “go, no-go” decision on Summer School on May 15th and will let the community know. The online courses at the High School and Middle School that have traditionally been offered will still be offered.

May 4th - 8th is Teacher Appreciation Week. Please join me in thanking our teachers for their incredible work. Like you, many of our teachers are working full-time, negotiating familial responsibilities and dealing, in some cases, with ill relatives around the country but from home. It has been a “heavy lift” for our teachers as you can imagine and I really appreciate all they do for our students.

I hope you saw my Tweet this Wednesday from Jesse Thackrey Preschool. I will continue to do the quick videos of hello from somewhere in the city each Wednesday. Please follow me @peternoonan and feel free to “retweet” the videos as they are an important part of staying connected with families and communicating.

Next Tuesday is Danny the Hippo’s birthday! Be on the lookout for a very clever and fun PSA with Danny this coming week. Also, if you want to tweet yourself in Mount Daniel gear and/or your favorite memories of Mount Daniel, please do to @MDHIPPOS, and if you tag me in the tweet, I will retweet it :).

Our Extended Day Care Program opened Registration today for the 2020-21 school year. You can register online at www.fccps.org/daycare.

On a personal note, I just want to extend my gratitude to all of you for your continued support of your students, our teachers, and the school division. When I arrived, we really got serious about being Better Together, and I have never seen a community personify that ideal better than the City of Fall Church. I am proud to be your Superintendent of Schools and can’t wait for all of this to pass. It will pass, and when it does, we will celebrate, have fun, and continue being a school division that is #BetterTogether.

Reminders

Communication/Morning Announcements

The Morning Announcements resumed, and I hope you have a chance to see them. We will keep these up for the remainder of the school year. Communications from me will shift now that Morning Announcements have resumed. I will continue to communicate but only once a week on Fridays. I will continue to use Twitter, also, to send messages out (including my Wednesday videos from ‘Somewhere in FCCPS’), so please follow me @peternoonan. Our FCCPS COVID-19 Page is full of resources to support students and their families as well, so please visit. And each of our schools will continue to do their weekly updates.

Food/Nutrition Support

FCCPS continues to provide weekly meal support each Friday. Any family in need can order 7-days worth of breakfasts and lunches for each child in their family. The boxes of food are distributed at Thomas Jefferson Elementary and George Mason High School. Please visit our FCCPS Nutritional/Support Webpage for information on how to sign up for this wonderful resource. Please reach out to Richard Kane (rkane@fccps.org) for more information or with questions.

All my best, and we miss you!

Peter

Abril 24, 2020

Peter
